ALL ABILITIES COMEDY CREW

The All Abilities "diff"abled group was proudly started in 2021 through the support of ILC grants. Classes run each week and are open to all people with dis/ability as well as their friends, family, and carers. It was our intention to bring free improvisational comedy classes to the community in an attempt to promote the development of alternative forms of communication and respite with the opportunity of self-expression.

The classes have been incredibly well-received as we have seen students learn the basics of improvisational theatre and comedy. Students have truly blossomed in their ability to speak freely and express all emotions through liberal comedic styles, and of this, we are incredibly proud.

Some things we've discovered since coming to class:

  • Improved communication from non-verbal participants
  • Better observation of body language and eye contact between participants
  • Opportunity to react and problem-solve when placed in a pressurized situation
  • Attention to timing in conversation with others
  • Discovery for carers of disabled culture: how we react – think – imagine
  • These sessions are a safe way for care givers to express frustration and reframe the way they manage disappointment often turning it into joy, self-forgiveness, empathy and comedy.

Here's some of our crew...
